Leman Fall Sports Recap

By Lucas Forwood

And with that the 2022 Leman fall sports season comes to an end. This year the fall sports have had a great soccer team along with a strong volleyball team. Unfortunately, these teams were not allowed to enter the playoffs as Leman is newly introduced to a new and better league, meaning Leman is on probation in their first year and cannot enter the playoffs in any sport. However, both these teams managed to stay competitive in the league, as they fought through adversity all season.
The Leman Girls Varsity Volleyball team managed a 4-10 record in the new league as they fought through many difficulties all season.
The Libero on the Leman Girls Varsity team, Izzie Agresta, tells us, “ At the end of the season, we got a lot better and were able to create good blocks, especially from the middles”.
In the middle of the season, the girls team was able to win 3 games in a row, catching a good run showing and demonstrating the potential of the team.
The Leman Boys Varsity Soccer team managed a winning record in the new league having a 6-4-2 record. The Leman boys varsity team were coming off a championship winning season last year, securing their spots in states (a bracket with all the league winners).
Although this team was able to fight a lot of hardships this year having their captain, Kwon Woo, injured most of the year. Here was what the senior told us about his game and how it affected the team.
“My injury got me at the beginning of the season in which I thought that I was going to be fine in a week. I wasn’t really aware of my injury and I pushed myself to play a game. Then I had my hamstring injury, that was the time when I realized I will have to recover for a long time. This year was my last year, so I worked on recovery everyday. But even though I worked hard on my recovery, it wasn’t looking good for the rest of the season. I pretended that I was good to play, but I really couldn’t run. I didn’t want to affect the team (negatively) so I stopped pretending.”
Kwon here tells us how he came to a realization about the team and how difficult it was for him to try and play this year, as he has been an essential player for the Leman team, starting all of his years here at Leman.
“I had a mindset before the season that I will try my best to have a good season with my teammates. I was able to play one game this year for the full 80 minutes; it was the worst game I had for Leman in my four years on the team. Being a co-captain for the season and not able to play games, I was really down to watch games; I was cheering my team from the bench and it was a new feeling for me. Nothing I can do other than praying and cheering for my team.”
Representing a mindset a captain should have, in a season where he could not play due to injury. This was a really hard experience for Kwon as it is his last year playing for the Leman Varsity Boys Soccer team, a team he has been since he was a freshman.
This allowed for the other Captain, Miller Thoss, to step up to the occasion this year as he was able to secure 6 goals this year leading the team to a winning record.
